APIM 08-003A: ARINC 653: Avionics Application Software Standard Interface Software (pdf, 157K)
Project: ARINC 653
Goal: Develop ARINC 653, Avionics Application Software Standard Interface, defining a standard interface between avionics application software and Real Time Operating System (RTOS).
Scope: ARINC 653, developed four parts:
- Part 0 - Overview of APEX Services
- Part 1 - Required Services
- Part 2 - Extended Services
- Part 3 - Conformity Test Specification
- Part 4 - Subset Services
- Part 5 - Non-API Related O/S Capabilities
Benefits: ARINC 653 is used extensively on new civil aircraft and new military aircraft produced by Airbus, Boeing and others. Avionics suppliers have expressed the desire to use ARINC 653 RTOS on regional, business and private aircraft. ARINC 653 enables application software to be developed concurrently and independent of the RTOS. This will enable avionics functional updates to be made with minimal impact on the underlying computing platform.
