Digital Video Encoding (DVE) Subcommittee

Last Update: December 13, 2007

Chairman: Open

Goal: Develop digital video interfaces for avionics that achieve two related but distinct goals:

  • Allow flight deck display equipment and video processing to evolve independently
  • Allow sensors (e.g., cameras) and video processors to evolve independently

The goal is to minimize avionics system cost and aircraft maintenance costs by providing a limited number of standard video interfaces for avionics. These standards will improve system interoperability.

Scope: First task is to develop and maintain ARINC 817, Digital Video Interface - Low Data Rate, for cameras and other types of video sensors. This standard is based on SMPTE-259M developed by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. Second task is to develop and maintain ARINC 818, Digital Video Interface – High Data Rate, developed for flight deck display interfaces. ARINC 818 is based on ANSI Fibre Channel Audio Video (FC-AV) defined by ANSI INCITS 356-2002.

Benefit: ARINC 817 and ARINC 818 will increase competition in the sensor and display markets. They will provide flexibility in avionic system architecture. Digital video may be used to supply video images for taxi guidance systems, cabin monitoring system, Head-Up Display (HUD) systems and other applications on the airplane. These standards will minimize system cost and aircraft maintenance costs by providing a limited number of standard video interfaces adapted to avionics needs. It will optimize interchangeability, maintainability, test equipment, etc.

AEEC General Session (October 2006) Update:

AEEC adopted the following document:

Draft 4 of Project Paper 818: Avionics Digital Video Interface, High Data Rate.

Project Paper 818 is based on ANSI Fibre Channel Audio Video (FC-AV) defined by ANSI INCITS 356-2002. AEEC endorsed the development of Supplement 1 to ARINC 818. Digital video over Ethernet will be defined as part of future work.
