Galley Insert (GAIN) Subcommittee

ARINC Project Initiation/Modification (APIM)

Goal

The goal of the GAIN Subcommittee is to standardize the physical dimensions, electrical interfaces, communication protocol, qualification test guidelines, and maintenance provisions for Galley Inserts to support standard installations. The primary areas of standardization include:

  • Standard wiring
  • Water connectors
  • Electrical connectors
  • Dimensions
  • Interfaces (Physical and Data)
  • Galley mounting rails

ARINC Specification 810: Definition of Standard Data Interfaces for Galley Insert (GAIN) Equipment, Physical Interfaces and ARINC Specification 812A: Standard Data Interfaces for Galley Insert (GAIN) Equipment, CAN Communications have been developed to define galley equipment, component interfaces and communications data.

These guidelines and principals are defined in ARINC Specification 810: Definition of Standard Data Interfaces for Galley Insert (GAIN) Equipment, Physical Interfaces and ARINC Specification 812A: Standard Data Interfaces for Galley Insert (GAIN) Equipment, CAN Communications.

Scope

The scope of the project is to cover all existing functional catering components (i.e., beverage makers, ovens, refrigerators, trash compactors, etc.) with future plans to include emerging catering components (e.g., ice makers, glass and dish washers, multi-beverage dispensers, etc.).

Benefit

Standardization provides common installation provisions for commercial air transport multi and single aisle aircraft beneficial to the airlines, airframers, and suppliers.

The benefits are in real interchangeability of GAIN units:

  • All space envelopes, dimensions, connectors, and tolerances are standardized
  • Modular GAIN concepts, as changing configuration is assured, for example:
    • Coffee Maker <> Espresso Maker
    • Freezer <> Oven
  • ARINC sized equipment fits into existing common Galley compartment
  • Standard connector pin layout
  • Minor technical modifications needed on only ~60% of current galley
  • Standardized data bus (CAN bus) providing connectivity to the aircraft system interfaces and BITE

Work Program

Further improvements will be made to ARINC 810 and ARINC 812A as needed.
