Cabin Systems Subcommittee (CSS) Meeting Report. Meeting held October 15-17, 2019, in Herrsching, Germany.

The Cabin Systems Subcommittee (CSS) met in Herrsching, Germany to prepare ARINC Standards for cabin systems and applications. The meeting was hosted by Safran.
The meeting focused on the following activities:

  • Update of ARINC 485 network bus standard. This work is driven by APIM 19-002 and is expected to be mature in April 2020. Supplements to be produced:
  • Supplement 4 to ARINC Specification 485: Cabin Equipment Interfaces, Part 1, Head End Equipment Protocol  
  • Supplement 5 to ARINC Specification 485: Cabin Equipment Interfaces, Part 2, Physical Layer – In-Seat Protocol
  • Development of Supplement 8 to ARINC Specification 628: Cabin Equipment Interfaces, Part 1, Cabin Management and Entertainment System – Peripherals. The purpose of this project is to evaluate and standardize certifiable technical implementation solutions for:
  • Global CWAP Operational Management (GCOM) for use on regional or international flights (APIM 15-006).
  • Interface definitions for High-Definition (HD) Landscape Camera and UHD (4K) video streams. (APIM 15-006 and APIM 16-005).
  • Standardization of aircraft interior surveillance systems
    (APIM 17-011).
  • Standardization of a Cabin Wireless Access Point (CWAP) capable of supporting greater than 1 Gbps Ethernet Interfaces (APIM 17-009).
  • Development of Supplement 5 to ARINC Specification 628: Cabin Equipment Interfaces, Part 5, Cabin Electrical Equipment and Wiring Installation Guidelines. The purpose of this project is to evaluate and standardize wiring protection methods, tools, and materials for in-seat wiring installations. This work is driven by APIM 19-003 and is expected to be mature in April 2020.
  • Development of Supplement 4 to ARINC Specification 664: Aircraft Data Network, Part 2, Ethernet Physical and Data Link Layer Specification to include the physical and data layer for Ethernet based on IEEE 802.bw (100BASE-T1) and IEEE 802.3 bp (1000BASE-T1) interface for commercial aircraft. A work plan for Supplement 4 to ARINC 664, Part 2 submitted by Boeing was reviewed at the meeting.
  • Development of Supplement 2 to ARINC Specification 800: Cabin Connectors and Cables, Part 2, Specification of Connectors, Contacts, and Backshells to include inserts and connectors suitable for use with IEEE 802.bw (100BASE-T1) and IEEE 802.3 bp (1000BASE-T1) Ethernet systems used by the next generation network bus (ARINC Project Paper 854). This work is driven by APIM 16-011A and is expected to be mature in April 2020.
  • Development of Supplement 3 to ARINC Specification 800: Cabin Connectors and Cables, Part 3, Specification of Cables to include CAT 5A (two wire) and CAT 6 (four wire) cables suitable for use with IEEE 802.bw (100BASE-T1) and IEEE 802.3 bp (1000BASE-T1) Ethernet systems used by the next generation network bus (ARINC Project Paper 854). This work is driven by APIM 16-011A and is expected to be mature in April 2020.
  • Development of Supplement 1 to ARINC Specification 800: Cabin Connectors and Cables, Part 4, Standard Test Methodology to include update to testing equipment and methods for cabin wiring. This work is driven by APIM 18-001 and is expected to be mature in April 2020.
  • Development of ARINC Project Paper 808A: 3GCN – Cabin Distribution System to update the 3GCN architecture to incorporate a 10 Gbps fiber backbone routed between the head-end IFE equipment and the Area Distribution Boxes that form the cabin network distribution system. An updated APIM (17-012A) was considered at the AEEC Mid-Term for a modified work scope. The new expected document maturity is April 2021.
  • Development of ARINC Project Paper 809A: 3GCN – Seat Distribution System to update the 3GCN architecture to incorporate a 10 Gbps fiber backbone routed between the head-end IFE equipment and the Area Distribution Boxes that form the cabin network distribution system. An updated APIM
    17-012A was considered at the AEEC Mid-Term for a modified work scope. The new expected document maturity is April 2021.
  • Development of ARINC Project Paper 854 to define the next generation cabin bus using Ethernet. The CSS will (1) develop Supplement 4 to ARINC Specification 664, Part 2 to define the physical and network layers for 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1, and (2) develop a new ARINC Project Paper 854 to define bus application to cabin systems, initially for in-seat network and Cabin Lighting Systems. This work is being performed under APIM 16-011A and is expected to be mature in April 2020.
  • Development of a fifth-generation cabin network bus (5GCN). This project is chartered under APIM 18-001 and is expected to result in a new ARINC Project Paper 8XX. The project is expected to be mature in April 2021.
