Draft 1 of ARINC Project Paper 829: Guidance for Wireless Use of COTS Crew Device

The attached document is intended to define the means to securely and reliably connecting COTS devices to an Aircraft Interface Device (AID) and/or local area network. This project was initiated in response to APIM 21-002.

The completed document will include guidance specifically relating to installation and operation of wireless crew devices (e.g., Electronic Flight Bags) to address areas including but not limited to:

  • Wireless technology used, e.g., type of IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth, or other
  • Device authentication methods, e.g., Pre-Shared Key versus RADIUS authentication, SSID policies etc.
  • Certificate management for both AID as well as tablet devices
  • Operating as part of a larger aircraft network
  • Network protection aspects, especially protecting unintended access by passengers (domain protection)
  • Failure mode scenarios

This initial draft was prepared based on inputs from the EFB Subcommittee meeting July 27-29, 2021 and subsequent teleconferences. This draft includes comments, highlights, and suggestions and will become input for Draft 2 of ARINC Project Paper 829: Guidance for Wireless Use of COTS Crew Device.
