Navigation Data Base (NDB) Subcommittee Meeting Report. Virtual meetings held April 21, 28, May 5, 6, 18, 28, June 4, and June 11, 2020.
The NDB Subcommittee met online to review 14 proposal for incorporation into Draft 3 of Supplement 23 to ARINC Specification 424: Navigation System Data Base and eight Discussion Items which could lead to future proposals. The meetings were held in response to APIM 11-005C. The following is a brief extract of what was discussed:
- Garmin reported that they would like to see a new field added to the Enroute Communication (EV) records so that they can distinguish at what altitudes (low, high, both) these frequencies are applicable. Garmin noted this will provide Garmin a better idea of how to sort the Enroute Communication records based on the aircraft’s phase of flight.
- Hughes Aerospace Corporation presented a discussion paper in seeking ARINC 424 adaptation of the RF segment coding as a path terminator in low altitude airways. Hughes noted there is a significant benefit to the vertical flight community who utilize COPTER RNP 0.3 Low Altitude Airways and are unable to safely operate in icing conditions that are often encountered at higher altitudes, particularly in areas of mountainous and precipitous terrain. The optional application of RF segments to COPTER RNP 0.3 airways will allow the vertical flight community to laterally maneuver around terrain and obstacles at a safer, lower altitude.
- MITRE reported on the action item they took at the last meeting in Renton, Washington on how to handle versioning with XML Schema. The action item was to provide a description of versioning strategies that will allow users to identify changes to the ARINC 424 XML Schema that break existing XML instance documents and changes that do not break existing XML instance documents.
The next meeting of the NDB Subcommittee is scheduled for March 16-18, 2021, in St Louis, Missouri. Once the details are solidified, an email notification will be sent.
The proposals accepted by the NDB Subcommittee will be included in the Draft 3 of Supplement 23 to ARINC Specification 424. A mature draft is expected in May 2021.
