Timely Recovery of Flight Data (TRFD) Working Group Meeting Report. Meeting held September 2 and December 16, 2020, online meeting.

The TRFD Working Group met on September 2 and December 16, 2020 to discuss intellectual property issues related to the Timely Recover of Flight Data.

At these meetings, the TRFD Working Group addressed the patent disclosure by FLYHT regarding Transmission of Flight Data (TFD). The Working Group reached a consensus that the standard ARINC disclosure statement appropriately addresses this issue for ARINC Project Paper 681: Timely Recovery of Flight Data.

Following the discussion on December 16, 2020, development continued on ARINC Project Paper 681 that describes Timely Recovery of Flight Data requirements, and aircraft architectures and interfaces per APIM 17-005.
ARINC Project Paper 681 describes two potential TRFD architectures:

  • Automatic Deployable Flight Recorder (ADFR) – a combination flight recorder (Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR)/Flight Data Recorder (FDR)) installed on the aircraft which is capable of automatically deploying from the aircraft.
  • Flight Data Streaming (FDS) – the ability to stream flight data from the airplane while in flight.

Meetings will continue every third Wednesday at 0700 Pacific, 1000 Eastern, and 1600 Central European Time. The next scheduled Timely Recovery of Flight Data Working Group teleconference is scheduled for January 13, 2021.
